does my child need feeding therapy?
Take a look at the list below, and see how many of the following apply to your child/family:
Choking, coughing, gagging, or vomiting during mealtimes
Ongoing poor weight gain or weight loss (dropping of percentiles on growth curve)
History of a traumatic choking incident followed by a decrease in food intake or weight loss
A food range of fewer than 20 foods, especially if foods are being dropped over time without adding new foods to replace them
Avoiding all foods of a specific texture (wet, squishy, crunchy, etc) or food group (fruit, vegetable, meat, starch, etc)
Being brand/presentation specific across environments to the degree of interfering with mealtimes and community outings
A history of reflux, tongue ties, oral-motor delays, struggles with eating/breathing coordination, or ongoing respiratory problems
Inability to transition to baby purees by 10 months of age
Inability to accept any table food solids by 12 months of age
Inability to transition from bottle/breast to a cup by 16 months of age
Relying on purees or soft foods over the age of 18 months
You, the caregiver, have reported “picky eating” at 2 or more well child checks
You feel that mealtimes are battles, and it is a struggle to get your child to the table, to engage with food, or to eat an adequate volume or variety of foods
If you said “yes!” to 4 or more items from this list, your child may benefit from being assessed by a feeding specialist.
